| Denali National Park is best
known for Mount McKinley, at 20,320 feet it's the tallest peak in North
America. Denali National Park was known as McKinley National Park when it was
created in 1917. As the park expanded it's name changed .In 1980, the park
grew to 6 million acres (9,375 square miles) and the name was changed from Mt.
McKinley National Park to Denali National Park.
The park gets over 350,000 visitors a year, most
of which are from mid-May thru Mid - September to see Mt. McKinley, as well as
the bears, caribou , moose , wolves and other wildlife that live in the park.
Activities include camping, hiking, flight seeing
tours , raft tours , & also bus tours daily that get you closer to Mt.
McKinley .
Denali's location
Denali National Park straddles the Alaska Range. The park entrance is 237
highway miles north of Anchorage and 125 miles south of Fairbanks. Mount
McKinley itself is about 140 miles north of Anchorage if you were to fly.
Population of the Denali area
McKinley Village, a rural area south of the park entrance, has about 140 year
around residents. Healy, 11 miles north, has close to 1,000 residents year
around residents. |
